Tariffs Remain Top Concern Among B.C. Voters Heading into the Election

The federal election is shaping up to be a tight race in BC.

In the 2021 federal election, the Conservatives secured a greater share of the popular vote (33% versus 27% for the Liberals), yet the Liberals won more seats (15 versus 13 for Conservatives). With most polls indicating a close split between the two parties in this race, how the seats will fall out is unpredictable.

If voter concerns are any indication, the Conservatives face a challenging battle to gain more seats. Recent Mustel Group polling shows the top issues are the relationship with the US and tariffs, and the related impacts on the economy. Cost of living, housing issues and healthcare are secondary.

On the issues of US tariffs and the economy, the Liberal party is seen as the most effective for dealing with both by a considerable margin; a total of 57% of British Columbians believe the Liberals are best poised to deal with Trumps tariffs, and 44% the economy, versus just 28% and 32% respectively, who trust the Conservatives to do the job.
